COPY EDITOR
This position is permanent. It is unpaid. The Eighth Man is seeking copy editors from around the US to edit a wide variety of articles (features, news, strategy, etc.). You will report directly to Chief Copy Editor Kerri Donnelly.
Key Responsibilities
- Check copy to ensure it is well written and logically structured.
- Correct grammar and spelling.
- Ensure the text is in line with The Eighth Man’s in-house style.
- Check facts and raise queries with the author.
- Establish a clear and focused set of priorities and aggressively plan ahead to help The Eighth Man maintain the clear cut lead in quidditch journalism.
Qualifications
- Strong communication skills.
- A meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail.
- Ability to work accurately under deadline pressure.

- Working knowledge of AP style a plus.

MANAGING EDITOR, CANADA
MANAGING EDITOR, MEXICO
These positions are permanent and unpaid. The Eighth Man is seeking to expand into coverage of Canada and Mexico and are looking for a skilled Managing Editor to oversee our publishing operations in their respective country. A managing editor combines the innovativeness of a writer with the practical focus of an operations manager. You should be able to suggest ideas for stories and see them through to publication. We expect excellent organizational and leadership skills as well as a unique problem-solving ability. You will report directly to Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dallas.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and manage articles for your respective country.
- Recruit, coach and supervise correspondents.
- Collaborate with the editor-in-chief and US managing editors to discuss beats, articles topics and other publication targets for The Eighth Man.
- Enforce deadlines.
- Oversee proofreading procedures and edit copy when necessary.
- Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone.
- Resolve issues as they arise.
Qualifications
- Exceptional ability in writing and editing.
- Proficiency in English.
- The managing editor, Mexico should also be proficient in Spanish; however, all articles will be written and published in English.
- French proficiency is a plus but not required for the managing editor, Canada; however, all articles will be written and published in English.
- Working knowledge of WordPress.
- Abilities in planning and coordinating people and operations.
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
- Outstanding communication and people abilities.
- Reliability and efficiency.
- Attention to detail.
- Demonstrated excellence as a reporter, writer and editor on a varied array of issues is a plus.

SCORES REPORTER
This position is permanent. It is unpaid. The Eighth Man is seeking Scores Reporters from each region to collect scores from tournaments and update the website’s scoreboard accordingly. You will be working with the head of the scores department, Dan Hanson.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect scores from tournaments as they become available (via Facebook, Twitter, reports from T8M staff, etc.)
- Updating the scoreboard on eighthman.com as these scores become available
- Working Saturday or Sunday shifts that can be anywhere between two to eight hours (dependent upon availability of fellow staff members). You will not be expected to work every week and we can plan around your tournament/practice schedules.
Qualifications
- Strong communication skills is a must. You may be willing to reach out to people via Facebook, Twitter and in-person to collect scores when they are not readily available.
- Experience with WordPress is a plus.

CORRESPONDENT
This position is permanent. It is unpaid. The Eighth Man is seeking correspondents from around the US to write a wide variety of articles (features, news, strategy, etc.). You will report directly to either Managerial Editor Ethan Sturm or Managerial Editor Tyler Walker and work occasionally with Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dallas.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and develop stories that break news, have impact and are exclusive to The Eighth Man.
- Execute those stories in a variety of mediums (written, visual, etc.), in a timely fashion under deadline pressure.
- Establish a clear and focused set of priorities and aggressively plan ahead to help The Eighth Man maintain the clear cut lead in quidditch journalism.

- Strong communication skills is a must. You may be willing to reach out to people via Facebook, Twitter and in-person to collect information.
- Must be able to recognize and develop newsworthy stories of state, national and global interest and work accurately under deadline pressure.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
- Demonstrated excellence as a reporter, writer and editor on a varied array of issues is a plus.
- Prior experience in sports journalism a plus.
- Ability to take photos and shoot video a plus.

PHOTOGRAPHER
This position is permanent. It is unpaid. You will not be compensated for travel expenses. The Eighth Man is seeking photographers from each region to shoot tournaments and major quidditch events. You will submit a minimum of 10, edited photos after each quidditch event you attend to be used on eighthman.com with credit. You will report to the Editor-in-Chief.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate high command of photography techniques through sophisticated craftsmanship and perform duties under minimal supervision.
- Create and develop visual storytelling to engage and entertain readers.
- Collaborate with correspondents, writers, the photo editor and other staff members to improve content quality.
- Establish a clear and focused set of priorities and aggressively plan ahead to help The Eighth Man maintain the clear-cut lead in quidditch journalism.
Qualifications
- Strong communication skills is a must. You may be willing to reach out to people via Facebook, Twitter and in-person.
- Must have access to camera equipment (DSLR preferred) and a photo-editing program.
- Must be able to recognize newsworthy situations and produce content based upon such recognition.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
- Demonstrated excellence as a photographer.
- Ability to attend at minimum of two tournaments a semester.
- Prior experience with sports photography a plus.

VIDEOGRAPHER
This position is permanent. It is unpaid. You will not be compensated for travel expenses. The Eighth Man is seeking videographers from each region to film games and highlight reels. You will be asked to submit a minimum of three videos–editing not required, but color correction preferred–after each quidditch event you attend to be used on eighthman.com with credit. You will report to Managerial Editor Ethan Sturm and Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dallas.
